Legends and Devotion
According to legend, Lord Ganesha( Pillayar) ran down with the Atmalingam( a godly Shiva Lingam) and established himself atop the hill to help Ravana from taking it back. Hence, the top sanctum is considered largely sacred.
The Thayumanaswami Temple is inversely deified, especially among expectant maters. It's said that Lord Shiva, in the form of a Mother, helped a sucker during parturition — hence the name “ Thayumanaswami ”( the god who came a mother ).
