Spread over 18 acres, the temple complex is an example of early Chola architecture, with later contributions from the Pandya and Vijayanagara kings. It features five concentric enclosures (prakarams) and majestic gopurams (towers) that mark its entrances. The innermost sanctum has a self-manifested Shiva Lingam, always surrounded by water from the natural spring beneath, even during dry seasons.

The temple also houses a shrine for Akhilandeswari, whose powerful energy is said to be balanced through special Sri Chakra installations, a contribution of Adi Shankaracharya.
